Art Deco was an artistic movement that began in Paris in the early twentieth century. It quickly became popular and it’s influence was in its prime in the roaring twenties and during the thirties. Then there was a decline until the 1960′s when it was given its name and it has been a rather timeless style since.
The style came out of the intense artistic interest in geometry that was occuring at the time. Think Picasso and his experiments in Cubism. The architecture of the time reflects this intense interest and many of the famous buildings built around that time such as the Empire State Building and Chryslar Building reflect this interest. In bridges the Golden Gate bridge.
Why are many grand achievements of humanity in this style? Look at the time. It was a time of wealth. Industry was exploding and so were the lifestyles of so many around the globe.
Art Deco is about grandeur and abundance. To get a chandelier, expecially a bronze chandelier, in this style is to make a bold statement. The hallmark is the sweeping grand curves.
